Pick a sunny spot for your Black Knight - it needs light for 6-8 hours daily. Also, shield it from strong wind if possible.
Hold off on putting plants in the ground until the end of spring or the start of summer, once the final cold wave has passed. Dig a hole that’s double the width and slightly deeper than the plant’s root ball. If your soil has poor drainage, mix in small bits of lime and compost to help water flow and adjust the soil’s pH balance. Put the plant in the hole and backfill with your mixed soil, pressing down to get rid of gaps.
Water it well right after you plant it. In its first year, keep it moist but not soggy. Once it gets going, it won’t need much water unless it’s really dry out.
Use a slow-release fertilizer in early spring if your soil isn’t great. Be sure to blend the fertilizer into the earth around the plant but not touching its roots.
Prune in late winter or early spring, before it starts to grow again. Trim the old stems down to about a foot high to get more blooms and fresh growth.
Place mulch around the base to lock moisture in, block weeds, and shield the roots in cold weather.
Keep an eye out for bugs such as Japanese beetles and caterpillars. If they appear, you can pick them off by hand or apply treatments if required.
Right after you put your Butterfly Bush in the ground - soak it well. This helps settle the soil around its roots and eases the shock of moving.
Water it well once a week to make sure the soil is damp but not wet. Doing this makes the roots grow deep, making the bush strong against dry times. If it rains a lot one week, you can skip watering. In really hot or dry stretches - check the soil more often. Water when the top inch is dry.
Once the Bush is used to its new home - it doesn’t need as much water. It can handle dryness well. But during long dry stretches, water every two weeks, making sure to soak the soil well. This kind of watering is better for the bush than light watering more often.
Water right at the bottom of the plant to avoid wet leaves, which can lead to sickness. Watering in the early morning is best. It lets the plant drink up before it gets hot and cuts down on water lost to the air.
Don’t add plant fertilizer right when you plant. Doing so can hurt the plant by harming its roots. First - make sure it gets enough water and that the soil is ready.
Wait for new green bits to show before you fertilize it. Use a slow-release plant fertilizer meant for blooming bushes in spring, with lots of the elements that help flowers (usually phosphorus). Follow the directions, putting it around the bush but not close to the main stem to keep roots safe. Pour water on it to spread the food in the soil.
Keep using slow-acting plant fertilizer each spring. If your bush is healthy and flowers a lot, once a year is enough. Watch how it grows and blooms. If it seems weak or flowers are few - give it a bit more fertilizer in early summer.
Too much fertilizer makes leaves grow but not flowers. Water the bush before and after feeding to stop root harm. This also makes the fertilizer mix into the soil better.
The best time to trim your Black Knight Butterfly Bush is in late winter or early spring, right before it starts to grow again. This helps the bush use its energy to make strong new growth that will have flowers.
Use sharp, clean cutting shears or big cutters. Clean your tools before starting with alcohol or a bleach mix to stop disease spread.
First - take off any dead, hurt, or sick wood. Cut these parts down to the base or to where the healthy wood is. Look for the oldest, biggest stems and take some out to make room for new growth from the bottom. Cut these stems to about 6 inches off the ground. Trim the rest to shape the bush. Cut just above a bud facing out; this makes the bush grow out, not in. Try to cut each stem back by about one-third. Make room in tight spots for air to move - cutting down disease risk.
After you’re done, clear all the cut pieces from around the bush to stop pests or diseases. Water the plant well to help it bounce back and grow new sprouts.
During the growing season, keep taking off old flowers to keep it blooming. If it gets too big in summer - it’s okay to trim a bit to keep its shape and size.
